Photographer's Note

The annual PoySangLong festival held in the North of Thailand and Shan State of Burma celebrates the ordination of young boys from 7 to 14 as Novice monks for a short time. Parasols are held above their heads by family members as they are carried, in procession around the temple grounds and town, also upon the shoulders of male relatives. This is so that their feet never touch the floor, outside buildings, until they are ordained. They dress as princes to simulate the Prince Siddhatha who became the Buddha after giving up all home comforts.
