Photographer's Note

Boy monks at a temple in Thailand's northeast pause in their play long enough to pose for a visitor's camera.

Some go to the temple school to live and study willingly. Others go out of family necessity, in need of someone to care for them. A stay at the temple might be from a few weeks to a lifetime, depending on the circumstances of each young fellow.

The ethnicity of NE Thailand is heavily influenced by nearby Lao and Cambodian people groups. In addition, many sub-ethnic groups abound within the larger Lao and Cambodian ethnic groups. These smaller groups also have representation in NE Thailand. While much of the physical characteristics are similar (darker skin, flat nose, hairy limbs, large eyes), the real differences are evident in local dialects and long-standing village customs.
