Photographer's Note

The husband and wife who operated this bus would make their way from Nong Khai to Loie one day, and then return the next. They did the nine to ten hour journey seven days per week. Like thousands of others in Thailand who make their living in the same way, all of their waking hours were spent on this wreck of a bus which represented their entire livelihood. On it they performed most of the daily rituals we all go through; grooming, eating, chatting, and, when the opportunity presented itself, sleeping.

Often, and to our horror, in the rear view window we would see our brave driver's chin drop into his chest as he struggled to stay awake while taking some seriously tight corners. His head would then snap up with a quick shake and, at stops, he'd take the opportunity to collect himself. On this occasion he caught me combing his hair and trying to wake himself up (he liked the photo though!).
