Photographer's Note

13 JULY 2004, THA PAE GATE, CHIANG MAI

Chiang Mai is Thailand's gateway to the north so I feel it is only fitting to post this angle on Tha Pae Gate, Chiang Mai's gateway to the old city that lies within the remains of the city's walls and moat.

Rather than recall for you a brief history of this important northern city, I can relay to you the significance of its traffic. By no means, was it as bad as Bangkok but there was enough of it to make crossing the street a challenge. Indeed, this "farrang" (foreigner) on a push bike was finding it difficult to cross Mun Muang Road. After climbing the stairs up to the edge of the gate (as featured in this photo ) I quickly took this photograph before the cyclist disappeared into the narrow streets of Chiang Mai.
