Photographer's Note

After the graduation ceremony at the Buddhist University (MBU) graduate monks assemble outside the hall, clutching their newly presented degrees. They have an interesting mix of expressions on their faces from exhaustion (it was a long ceremony) to elation.
The Buddhist University was founded by King Rama 5th and offers degrees in Buddhism. Pali, Philosophy, Social Sciences. Humanities and Education, subjects deemed suitable for monks to study.

Originally only for monks, in recent years it has opened its doors to lay people and nuns as well. After graduation, many monks return to lay life, the rest will return to their home communities to become teachers or community leaders.
