Photographer's Note

I was so taken by this Tajik lady that I just had to try share this experience with Trekearth. I had been sight seeing in the narrow lanes at the back of the Great Mosque in Khujand when I came across a building with an open door and this lady sitting inside. I was fascinated by the map of the northern hemisphere sky when she asked me to come inside.

Thankfully I had a perivoichek (translator) with me so we could converse. She was the manager, cleaner, caretaker, cashier, host of the Khujand planetarium. As she did not have many "adult" visitors she was delighted to be able to show off her domain and knowledge. Her only visitors these days are school children who regard the day there as a day to play. We had a wonderful 45 minutes with her driving the machine and telling the night story with enthusiasm.

The planetarium is the only one in Tajikistan (here in the far north of the country), and was a gift from the German government many years ago. I also heard that it is the largest one in the southern "Stans".

Far more an experience of great hospitality than a photo shoot I am afraid.
