Photographer's Note

This is one of the Perahera festivals in the hill country of Sri Lanka, a part of the country which managed to preserve most of its culture despite aggressive efforts of christian missionaries. It was also the last part of the island to be colonized, having resisted both the portuguese and dutch invasions.

This was the main "part" of the procession, the boy on the decorated elephant and another elephant, carrying some sort of a buddhist relic.

The main Perahera festival is called Esala Perahera and is held every July/August in Kandy, the biggest town of the Hill Country.
