Photographer's Note

On my bike drive from my home to the Caucasus there were 2 oblasts of Ukraine, Kharkivska and Donetska, as well as 3 subjects of federation in the Russian Federation. Driving along Rostov – Stavropol highway, after my native Rostovskaya Oblast I passed just several kilometers thru Krasnodarskiy Kray and got into Rostovskaya Oblast again, this time in the last on the road its Peschanokopskiy district. After the district the Stavropolskiy Kray began.

The names of the district and its capital, the Peschanokopskoe Village, derive from the Peschanaya (Sandy) River, which is now under ground. Maybe the name “Peschanokopskoe” (“sand” + “to dig”) means “of the buried Sandy River”.

The village is known as an important railway station and the birthplace of a prominent Soviet military commander, Pyotr Mikhaylovich Davidov (1894 – 1943). In 2002 the “Pobeda” (“Victory”) Boulevard was constructed there. You can see it in the picture.
