Photographer's Note

Mullanur Vakhitov (1885-1918) was a muslin communist revolutionary who fought in 1905 and 1917 revolutions. After meeting Lenin he became the chief of Muslin matters in Russia. During Civil War, when the Kazan city was attacked by an army of opponents, he was caught and executed, and after that became a communist martyr. Maybe being alive he would not escape from the period of purges during Stalin.
Russians were a very religious people and Soviet government was ever imitating the religious aspect of monuments, creating their own atheist saints.
