Photographer's Note

When I was riding my bike trough the southern part of Rostov Oblast and across whole Stavropol Kray, there was gloomy and rainy weather preventing me from photographing. But between these two mentioned above subjects of Russian Federation, a narrow strip of territory of the Republic of Kalmykiya stretched. This was only about 12 km of my way, but through the big settlement Priyutnoye, when the sun was shining briefly. The settlement’s name is from the Russian word “Priyut (Приют)” meaning refuge, shelter or asylum.

In Priyutnoye mainly Russians live, while 53.3 % of Kalmykiya’s population are Kalmyks. The Kalmyks are the only inhabitants of Europe whose national religion is Buddhism.

This Krestovozdvizhenskaya church was built in 1995 for personal expenses of Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, the first president of the Republic of Kalmykiya.
