Photographer's Note

Palace of Prince Alexander Menshikov, the first governor of St. Petersburg, was founded on Vasilevsky Island in 1710 This is one of the earliest surviving buildings of the city, combining residential and administrative functions. Appearance of the palace is unique, it has developed in the course of a long, phased construction from 1710 to 1727. In its construction and decoration attended Western architects and artists: Francesco Fontana, Johann Gottfried Schedel, Domenico Trezzini, Carlo Bartolomeo Rastrelli, Georg Johann Mattarnovi, Jean-Baptiste Leblond Alexander.
