Photographer's Note

When traveling over the historic Cossacks territories of Kuban and Don, which are roughly coinciding with today's Krasnodar kray and Rostov oblast of Russian Federation, I got twice on the Don Federal Motorway M4 (Novorossiysk Krasnodar Rostov-on-Don Voronezh Moscow). Firstly I got there near Goryachiy Klyuch and along M4 came to Saratovskaya (20 km). Secondly I got on M4 between Korenovsk and Bataysk, starting near Vyselki and arriving to Rostov-on-Don (200 km).

On that way I saw this memorial 2 km further to the North after the bridge over the Kugo-Eya River near Kushchevskaya, the administrative center of a rural area in Krasnodar kray. The memorial is dedicated to the 4th Kuban Cossacks Cavalry Corps, which in August 1942 fought to the bitter end when defending approaches to Caucasus against Nazi army. Also there is a museum of Cossacks military history there.
