Photographer's Note

This hill in the park of one of the most ancient cities of Russia, Trubchevsk, is called Gorodok (township). At this place the city was founded on the elevated right bank of the Desna River in the X-th century.

The memorial flagstone, which is seen behind the rotunda, reads:
ГОРОДОК памятник раннего железного века (VI V в.в. до Н.Э). В конце XII века входил в единую оборонительную систему г. Трубчевска, защищающего РУСЬ от половецких набегов, а в XV XVII в.в. от литовско-польских интервентов. Охраняется законом.
GORODOK is a memorial of the earlier Iron Age (VI V centuries B.C.). At the end of XII century it was in the indivisible defense system of the town of Trubchevsk, that defended RUSSIA against Polovetsian incursions, and in XV XVII centuries against Polish-Lithuanian interventions. It is registered under the law.

Now, at this historic place, there is an iron tree of eternal love. You can see it at the left part of the picture. Newly married couples hang their locks to the tree and throw the keys away, as a symbol of everlastingness of their love. In other towns and cities of the former Soviet Union, bridges over rivers are used for similar purposes.
