Photographer's Note

Sepulchers, Malinao, Aklan.

Stacked tombs being overrun by the jungle at the cemetery of Malinao in the province of Aklan. Cemeteries in the Philippines are typically built vertical like this. However, the rich in town have their own plots and masoleums, individual burial tombs some of which are built like mini-mansions - some complete with rooms and kitchens and appliances - ameneties for the departed in the afterlife. For ordinary people, it's condominium style, presumably to save space - like these in the picture. These "condominiums" form the wall of the cemetery and defines the perimeter. The mausoleums and individual plots are in the middle surrounded by the wall.

Malinao is a rural, agricultural town in the middle of Panay island in central Philippines. For more information about this town, visit their website
