Photographer's Note

I went on a solo backpack trip to Coron Island in the province of Palawan, Philippines last week, and this is what I discovered…a gorgeous paradise called Malcapuya Island. The surrounding water is crystal clear and corals and various marine life abound on this beach. It is an ideal place to swim and snorkel, and just chillax.

And although I was so happy to discover and see this place, I was sad at the same time for I learned that the island was already bought by Henann Group of Resorts, the same group that developed the Boracay Regency Beach Resort and Spa. And why am I sad?...because they will turn this beautiful island into a private resort, and so guests are no longer free to visit the island, swim and snorkel! Eventually, they will charge a hefty amount of cash just to set foot on this island. Privatizing the island may be good news to some for the comfort it will bring as long as they have the cash to burn, it may also mean “very good business” for big multinational resort owners and developers, and… “may also mean some good news for the local economy” of Coron…but I am pretty sure that the big resorts will have their sizeable share of “development” compared to the speck of benefit it will bring to the local people of Coron. I feel sad because fewer people would get to bear witness to the wonderful beauty of this gorgeous island. I feel sad because it was once FREE FOR ALL. I feel sad, because it will be closed off from the public in a few years time. (Well, it’s still free up to this time….but time is running out).

I hope to be back there again in December, and the following years thereafter, until construction of the private resort has not fully commenced…or until I, an ordinary mortal, have access to it.
