Photographer's Note

Guys like this can be found all over Manila, I guess you could classify him as self employed. What he does is to have a claim to a certain portion of a street in Manila. When a car appears to be looking for a place to park, he will wave them towards an open spot. Often there are many visible spots, but that doesn't stop them from pointing out the obvious. All of this is done in exchange for a few pesos of course.

Originally, I just perceived these guys as being opportunists who profit from offering an unneeded service, but on my previous trip to Manila, something happened that changed my mind. My girlfriend and I were at a Starbuck's, outside having a coffee and a transvestite with a tool kit (I am not kidding at all) went up to an SUV that had just parked and tried the door handle. As soon as they saw this, the parking attendants from that area (not this guy) immediately chased the transvestite car thief off. Although he may have never known it, the few pesos the SUV owner paid for the service was likely the best investment he ever made.
