Photographer's Note

The town of Bacarra is founded as a mission by the Augustinian friars in 1590. It is the third oldest town of Ilocos Norte in the Philippines. This used to be a huge belltower with two levels more, that if you are in Laoag City the province capital, you could see the bell tower. It was built during the term of Fray Pedro Berger in 1828-1848. The tower was destroyed by several strong earthquakes. It still stands as a painful reminder of the forced labor the Bacarrenos have to endure during the Spanish occupation. I know this because I was born and raised in this town and there are many stories about this bell tower from old folks. The huge bells inside the tower still sound so divine, I remember when I was a kid we could here it when we are still far from the town on our way to the church.
