Photographer's Note

the kalash people are a pocket of non-muslims in the heart of islam. there's an insane amount of interest in them & you can't move in the region without bumping into ngos. you get the impression that the kalash people would really rather be left alone. but instead groups of westerners are fighting out how best to save their culture.

i was there during joshi; spring festival. for pakistan, there were lots of tourists there. admittedly the kalash are incredibly colourful & make for great photos. but it annoys me when tourists are so insensitive & stick cameras in locals' faces, especially without asking permission. by the time the festival had started they were fed up having their picture taken. as soon as i sensed this, i stopped taking photos...and just sat back & watched the circus of tourists snap away & annoy the kalash more and more. it made me so embarassed to own a camera. there are more important things than getting 'the' letting the locals enjoy their festivals.

i took this photo a few days before the festival & the 2 girls had just been playing hand clapping games.
