Photographer's Note

On the streets of Kathmandu you will see all sorts of contraptions and vehicles used to carry people and goods and all sorts of other things.

A friend of mine said he liked this picture as for him it gave him a sense of hope and despair, analagous to the current troubles in Nepal and the plight of its people. That this guy carries on pushing his cart as he wants to reach his destination eventually regardless of how difficult it may be. He would prefer an easier and more efficient form of transport but this is his lot, so he carries on pushing it until it ends.

I posted this picture today as King Gyanendra of Nepal has finally stated, after more than 2 weeks of a national strike and daily demonstrations against his autocratic rule, to reinstate democracy.

He is either seeing sense or relenting to pressure from the people of Nepal and from foreign dimplomats who must be telling him it is time to go. I believe it is the latter. He has not shown any reason to believe he has any sense since he became the autocratic ruler of Nepal.

The people of Nepal have never liked him and have despised his rule over them.

Every Nepali I have ever spoken to wished that "he would go to hell in a handcart."
