‘Lumbini - Buddha's birthplace’

Lumbini is located in the south of Nepal, in the Terai or the low-lying part bordering India.
It’s a place with many religious sites that are mainly visited by Nepalese and Indians.
There are western tourists but they’re a smaller minority. After all, there is no Himalaya to be seen here :)

Lumbini is famous because it’s the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism, who lived from 623 to 543 BC. Siddhartha Gautama is better known as Buddha.
This place is one of the four main pilgrimage sites related to Buddha's life.

In Lumbini a park with the size of 3 km by 2 km was designed.
A long channel runs through this park with streets on both sides where Buddhist communities around the world have built temples.
All these temples and monasteries reflect the various typical architectural styles from the different countries.
Today you can visit monasteries built by all Buddhist countries in Asia and also a few built by western countries such as France, Germany and Canada.
It is a huge site where you should pull out at least two and preferably three days.

The main picture and one in the WS show the Maya Devi Temple, the spiritual heart of Lumbini.
It is the most sacred site in the entire park. Archaeologists have identified this place as the exact spot where Buddha was born in around 563 BC.
The sacred pond on the photo is the place where Queen Maya Devi (mother of Buddha) bathed before giving birth to Siddharta Gautama.

The many Nepalese and Indian visitors in the temples and gardens contribute to a unique experience of the place.
I personally would recommend a visit of Lumbini to anyone who ever goes to Nepal.
It is accessible by public bus from Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan. However, it was a very long ride ...

Information from Wikipedia, travel guide Lonely Planet and a leaflet I received in Lumbini.
Depending on the information source you will get different dates for the life of Buddha ...
Take the dates with a grain of salt.
