Photographer's Note

In the Himalayas most of the timber work is done by hand. Trees are dropped with an axe and boards are ripped with either a one or two-man saw.

Planks are cut short for transport by pony. Some sawyers leave the last few inches of the boards connected on one end so that it's easier to secure the load.

The teahouses in which you stay will be built from local stone and these hand-sawn planks.
