Photographer's Note

I have already written a few words about hard work in Nepal. Now, look at this man using no protective equipment, not even as much as a pair of welding glasses. An accident waiting to happen…

This image was taken in Thamel, the district where most tourists stay while visiting Kathmandu. This is also the location of the budget hotel Horizon – my home away from home in Nepal. Thamel, situated on the outskirts of the old town, did not suffer much during the earthquake. Full of mini travel agent offices (that look more like drug dealers’ dens), souvenir stalls and outdoor clothing shops, Thamel beams with optimism even though there are visibly less tourists these days. People do come to Nepal to trek in the Himalaya but they don’t stay in Kathmandu as long as they used to.
