Photographer's Note

A scene we often come across in any country of the world – local men enjoying the afternoon, sitting, chatting and watching the world go by.

I noticed in quite a few countries that it is always the local men who start the trend of wearing western style clothes. While women still parade in colourful traditional dresses, men wear jeans, jumpers and suits and the only traditional element of their garments are hats. I observed that phenomenon in Kyrgystan, Uzbekistan, Nepal and a few others. Note the sign of the times – the youngest one is not even wearing a hat.

I was kind of hoping to see the same, if not five, at least one or two guys when I visited in 2016 after the earthquake but found different people sitting on this bench (see WS). I hope they are still alive.
