Photographer's Note

Gai Jatra is the ceremony to honor your relatives who died in the last year. You will go to heaven if you are holding a cow's tail. The umbrella shades a picture of the dead person. People dress in costumes of Gods or silly costumes, to amuse the sadder participants. There are brass marching bands, and lots of cymbals and drums if you can afford them. Incense fills the air. People along the way offer treats and milk to the parade participants. They try to make a round of all the temples to receive blessings. It is a bit different in Patan, Baktupur and Kathmandu.

There is something so very off-the-cuff here and I really like it - it really puts you there. Techincally it's a little hot and soft but I think the motion on the cow and its herder is what makes the picture so very good. Regards, TW

Hi Gloria,

The story is useful but the framing of the pic dosen't satisfy me. Actually without the story the POV seems to be missing.
