Photographer's Note

I heard loud chanting, and ran around the stupa, at Boudanath, to see if the Maoists were coming down the street. When what to my wondering eyes should appear, but hundreds of orange clad men shouting what sounded like "gold farb", over and over, at the top of their lungs. They raced to the top level of the stupa, pulled out musical instruments, began to play, and dance. If I was surprised, it was no match for the look on the Tibetians faces. This was the day when you paid a naked man, who rode a straw man to the river, to take away your sins. Lo and behold, one of those straw men, and later the rider, was also present at Bouthanath, much to the laughing surprise of the Tibetians, who are Buddhists. They later passed me, the naked man holding a burning bunch of straw. These Hindus, and hundreds of others, were on their way to Paspatinath to see the burning straw men and their riders thrown into the holy river.
