Photographer's Note

During a visit to a Red Karen village around Loikaw we were invited to a house where women gathered to chew betel and exchange the news. Some wear brass, others don't. The ladies who do wear brass wished to be photographed for posterity as the last generation of wearers. They explained that the neck segment alone could weigh up to 7 kg. We were lucky to witness a rare and long process of replacing/embellishing the brass rings on another lady.
