Photographer's Note

On the street of a small village outside of Mandalay, like in many other places around the country in early mornings, one can witness processions of novices and monks making their rounds holding their begging bowls. The boy's face, at the head of the procession, is adorned with "Thanakha", a paste generated by grinding the bark of Thanakha tree. The practice of applying such make up is unique only to Burma (Myanmar) which is believed to protect the face from sun.
