Photographer's Note

I arrived in Mandalay at 2 am (while in Burma I spent every other night on an overnight bus to be able to spend the days on research and photography). I slept, for a few hours, on a bench in Mandalay bus station, with my head on my rucksack, then took a taxi to Amarapura. Finding accommodation for the next night and leaving my bags there was the distant second priority.

I wanted to catch the sunrise over the famous U Bein Bridge but the weather was still the same as in Mandalay, Bagan and Hsipaw: gloomy in the morning, overcast during the day.

Good weather for photographing people...

There were tourist boats on Taungthaman Lake already, waiting for the sunrise that was not to happen. Not enough to satisfy my photographic ambitions, but when I spotted this lady making a bonfire I knew that was the shot I wanted.

It was the last cloudy morning during my trip to Burma so brace yourselves for pink sunrises, orange sunsets and golden stupas that are about to follow. :-)
