Photographer's Note

This shot shows an atmosphere of one of the most interesting border-crossings I have ever passed. Mongolian-Chinese border has to be passed only in some vehicle, not by foot. So if you got stuck in Mongolian border town of Zamin-Uud, you need to arrange some transportation across the border. The transportation I've used you can see in the front of the picture - very very old jeep that is fueled with crude oil and run by considerable amount of miracle.
The other things you can see on the picture (except several trucks) is absolute nothing that represents the mongolian border post in the middle of Gobi desert. And we spent about 10 hours waiting to cross it because the vehicle we were driving in was registered as a truck and truck is not allowed to transport passangers (there were 7 Mongolians, 1 New Zealandian and 2 Croatians in this truck) so we waited until some friend of the truck driver came on duty (friend was border police officer) and only then we were allowed to cross.
On the other side of the border - surprise. Chinese border post near the city of Erenhot (Erlian), looks like small airport building, built of marble and glass with X-ray detectors, air-con and many displays, computers and other things.
Dazed with such spectacular building, we almost didn't notice that even there we were waiting for almost two hours because chinese border guards hadn't heard of any country with the names like "Croatia" or "New Zealand" and we didn't know how to say it (or write it) in Chinese so it required some additional checks until they managed to find them on the map....
Oh, yes, and when you finally manage to settle all border formalities you're allowed to cross the border passing beneath the huge artificial rainbow over the road with the sign "Welcome to the Peoples Republic of China". :)
