Food is serious business in Penang. George Town's beautiful old streets are filled with the smells and sizzling sounds of a meal being prepared. The only place to eat is on the street, it's cheap, and the food far exceeds anything a tourist cafe or hotel could muster.

I think, food is serious business everywhere. Especially if we have talk about Chinese Food. I like it and your photo. Good exposure, good quality for so hard light conditions.

Hi Justin,

Yes, the streets that you were in are probably some of the best areas for street, or what we call 'hawker' food here in Malaysia. I like the way you have captured this scene, with the light focusing only on the main subject, and the steam coming out creates a nice atmosphere. This may also work well in B&W, I think.

Welcome back from me too! You've presented us with another of your understated, candid, everyday-life street shots. I like the warts-and-all treatment, with the electric cords and strip light not cropped out. These two cooks were obviously too busy to pay you any attention, which supports your comment about the seriousness of food here. Nice one.

Excellent street shot. I just love street food all over the world, and south-east Asia is one of the best places for it. Thanks to the neon lamps of the stall, your main subject is perfectly illuminated while the rest is nicely obscure with just enough details to put the cook in context with his stall and customers.

lovely candid street shot. i love the whole ambiance and the sense of activity in the frame, with the people waiting for their food in the bg. great light management and the steam just makes the shot perfect.

Long time no see, but it's fun doing some catching up on the shots you've posted. This is a superb one. A good idea to stick to the colour version.

And...yummy...Penang still is my favourite place for street food.
