陈氏 (Chen Clan)

Why the founder of Chen Clan Academy in Kuala Lumpur is Mr Chan but not Mr. Chen? It is because the pronounce of the word 陈(Chen) is different in dialets.

陈 -pronounce as Chen in Mandarin
- pronounce as Chan in Cantonese(Guang Zhou)
- pronounce as Chin in Hakka (Ke Jia)
- pronounce as Tan in Hokkien (Fu Jian)

书院 (Pin Yin : Shu Yuan) / Academy is refer to the place for teaching, study, debate and discussing in China since Tang Dynasty (618- 907 CE ), or in other word it is a school. Actually Chinese Academy system was start at the era of Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC) even earlier, but have no any school building as a fix location in ancient time, teachers are teaching in their own house or in the house of students.
