Photographer's Note

The Penan is one of the ethnics of Sarawak, one of the two Malaysian states in Borneo. While most of the Penans have been resettled to reservations for questionable economic reason, the rest are still hunters and gatherers on the mountainous forest of the Sarawak hinterland on the headwaters of the Baram River.

The lives of these Penans are endangered with the presence of Caterpillars and Chainsaws, getting inroad into their mountainous forest harvesting, clear cutting timbers.

In this photo, two Penans posed under the canopies of their forest, with the sunset colors of an early evening above them, at a remote village about 2 days forest trek from Long Semiyang, a riverine village along the upper reaches of the Baram River.

Both are wielding spear tipped blowpipes and on their waists, strapped their canisters of poison tipped darts and the gourd shaped containers containing the spares of dart's flight stabilizer.
