Photographer's Note

I remain in Sabah state, east Malaysia, in 1979.

This is a mosque in the small town of Kota Belud. I have absolutely no memory of taking this photo. In fact I can't recall anything at all from my visit here. Even reading my diary from that journey doesn't help. My inner eyes don't get any visions of the town. I described Kota Belud as looking like a "wet, gloomy, dirty and rundown" village. I suppose the constant heavy showers, the lack of electricity and running water and the fact that nearly everything, including the few restaurants, closed down at around 7 PM made me want to be somewhere else.

I must have taken this photo during one of the short spells of almost sunny weather between the showers.

I have scanned this from a Kodachrome slide.
