Photographer's Note

I caught this in the split second before she realiased of my presence! A shot in a busy colourful tribal market in a cool mountainous rural Luang Namtha - a pensive portrait of a charming young Akha -identified by her less elaborate headdress- who was probably tired lost in thoughts when she was far away in her own little world. That’s why I couldn't resist regardless of how little I saw it. Not the most attractive picture and you will either love it or hate it, but I love it.

But her face is doubtless hard day's work, I bet what heavy loads she seemed to handle everyday as a matter of routine with the basket has done its fair share of work throughout her life. The same way of rural life that has not changed. What clever ideas though, I was fascinated by the simple rudimentary head-sling shoulder board they use which helps to lessen the total load. Whether the tradition and culture of this tribe will survive in this century is unclear, only time will tell.

Meantime, It's a long walk home to their isolated Thatphum Phuk village some 8-10km away from here..........
