Photographer's Note

Welcome back to Laos:
The warmest smiles imaginable of this humble woman really touched me.......

A quick grab of a charming Tai Dam woman, a colorful and flamboyant ethnic minority taken at the vibrant Muang Sing crowded ethnic market, a meeting place of various ethnic minorities from Northern Laos.

Characterized by colorful head-scarves and tight-fitting shirts adorned with silver buttons, Tai Dam women are easily identified. They are believed to originate in south west Yunnan and to have begun migrating to the Luang Namtha and Muang Sing regions in the late 19th century and they differ from many other groups in that they are not Buddhist, instead they practice a form of ancestor and spirit worship.

Situated in a remote mountainous Northern Laos, Muang Sing is only about 10km away from the Chinese border. Once a thriving opium market in the 60s and part of the Golden Triangle, is home to ten different ethnic groups.
