Photographer's Note

Back to Laos. After the Lahu and Khmu minority, I visited an Akha village. This place is dryer and further away from water sources, since it is located in the highlands. It has great views to the surrounding forest, but it is less pleasant to walk around because it's very steep.

I took this photo while wandering around the village. During the day kids can be seen playing around. There's a school but I was there on a weekend. The older children help in the fields at the weekend and the smaller ones take care of the even smaller - you can see a girl running with a baby on her back. Women go out very early in the morning, before the sunrise, to work in the rice fields. Some men go out as well, to hunt, but the majority stay in the village taking care of domestic chores. Pigs, chickens and dogs aren't in contained areas and can be seen everywhere.
There's no electricity and the closest road is one day walking distance.

More information about the Akha minority can be seen here and here (Wikipedia).
