Photographer's Note

This photo was taken at the early morning market in Luang Nam Tha, when I saw this attractive and colorful Akha ethnic woman and roved around until I could finally get a few good shots of her. She really caught my attention and the reason is understandable, the glowing colors temptation to capture is a hard one to resist and she shines brilliantly above the rest for she is so photogenic with her distinctive headgear, full of life and needless to say she is the star of the show.

Luang Nam Tha means 'Big River Tha', one of the most interesting provinces in mountainous Northern Laos. Market place is always my favourite spot for photo shoot it is where the colorful Akha or Black Hmong ethnic minority hill tribe farmers would congregate daily to trade their farm produce. The vibrancy of colors from their outfits become the major attraction and this place would brighten anybody's day, sunny and grey, irresistible to any photographer

Traditionally Akha women wear wide leggings, a short black skirt with a white beaded bag similar to a sporran and a loose fitting black jacket with heavily embroidered cuffs and lapels. The black caps, such as this woman is wearing, are decorated with beads, shells and silver coins.
