Adventures of Babushka in Kazakhstan.

Kolsay Lakes – one of the most beautiful places in Kazakhstan. These lakes are located at heights 1800, 2250 and 2700 metres above sea level. They are distinguished by the unique mountain watershed consisting of three natural zones and amazing variety of rare plants and animals. Kolsay Lakes are considered a pearl of Northern Tien-Shan located in 300 km from Almaty city. The first lake, which is located at the height of 1818 metres, has the length of 1,5 km, and width about 300 metres and is deep 336 m.
The middle lake is located at the height of 2552 metres, 5 km higher from the first lake. It is big and extraordinary picturesque, and looks like a bowl from turquoise crystal in palms of mountains. Top Kolsay Lake is 4 km further and 600 metres higher than the middle lake. Behind it, 6 km further, there is a border with Kyrgyzstan through pass Sary-Bulak (3278м) from which you can enjoy the view to a blue Issyk Kul.

I had not time to go to the second and third lake, unfortunately, but I decided to go round this lake. I saw small paths on the left and on the right, so I took the direction clockwise. At first the path was narrow but quite good. But later it become less visible and sometimes it was quite poor, on stones and bushes, almost not visible. But when after a bit difficult walk I reached the other end of the lake there was a surprise for me - quite a big stream. I walked around looking for any bridge, but there was none. What to do?? I saw the better path on the other side, so I packed my trousers and camera to the backpack and crossed this stream. The water was bitterly cold but not deep, just up to the knees. And the path on the other side was much better and provided fantastic views.
The driver was waiting for me in the view point near the parking. But when I arrived he was not there. He was very worried that I was away long time, so he went to look for me. He asked a few locals, but of course no one saw me. Finally he saw me on the other side of the lake. He was quite shocked, nobody went that path. Since then he called me Iron Grandma (Zelieznaja Babushka) :).
