Photographer's Note

This photograph is taken in Ueno Park in Tokyo at the time of the now of last year. It was a warm winter and the bloom of a cherry tree was very early last year. However, the cherry tree has just still attached the bud, because a cold winter continued this year. In this year, although the warm weather of spring continues for the past several days, probably, at least one more week is needed for the bloom of a cherry tree. Ueno Park is one of the cherry blossoms viewing spots of Tokyo, and many people enjoying the cherry blossoms visit there every year. There are two types of visitors for people who enjoy the cherry blossoms. One is visitor who enjoy the the cherry blossoms in full bloom, walking along the passage. Another is visitor who enjoy the cherry blossoms, covering a passage with a sheet, carrying in a meal and alcohol there, and talking with friends or coworkers. It seems that they comes early and saves the place in order to secure a good place. This photograph is taken the moment which the visitor appropriate for the friend's group of tea party gathered this place together, sat on a red carpet and a mat, and has taken lunch in the park. We can be seen that some there are some visitors in kimono. The bloom of a cherry tree goes north slowly toward a northeast and Hokkaido from the area of the south in Japan for about two months from the middle of March to the middle of May.

Cherry blossom viewing("Hanami") is the unique customs to Japan in which mainly appreciate the flower of a cherry tree and it is pleased with a spring visit. Cherry trees are trees widely seen in all parts of Japan. In order that the flower may bloom all at once in spring one time, and it may break up in only a little less than two weeks. It serves as important natural features which form a Japanese sense of the season. It is further impressed by the shortness of the lovely flowering period of the beauty and the luxury when they fall, and it often compares to the transiency of people's life. Hanami is said for the event of the aristocrat of the Nara period(710-794)to be the origin. Although the plum which just descended from China was appreciated at the Nara period, the cherry tree has been replaced at the Heian period(794-1185).
