Photographer's Note

Since many photographers have posted the photograph of Great Buddha of Kamakura at this site, I may repeat the same explanation. Now, it is put on the precincts of a temple in Kōtoku-in which is a Buddhist temple of the Jōdo-shū sect in Hase, Kamakura-shi. Although Kōtoku-in is a temple which makes the principal image Great Buddha which should also be called symbol of Kamakura, the founding is unknown and deficient in historical records also about the circumstances of creating of Great Buddha. It is an established theory
what it is supposed that existing Great Buddha was started the creating in 1252. Great Buddha of Kamakura is a bronze statue as for which the weight is about 121 tons and the height is 11.39 meters. It's face is the square superficial looks and it is shown the special feature of the Buddha statue of the Song Dynasty which was in fashion at the Kamakura term, since the proportion of the head is large as compared with the body and is stooped posture. It is designated as the national treasure as Buddhism sculpture representing the Kamakura period. The pose which constructs both hands is connected on the knee. It turns out that it is the Amitābha image based on faith of Shingon Buddhism or Tiantai.
