Photographer's Note

This photograph is taken at the exit in Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo. Now, the New Year's Sumo tournament of the Sumo match is performed here. It begins from 9:00 of a morning and finishes about 6:00 of the evening. The match is performed from the wrestler of a lower status and continues the wrestler of the upper status in order. Probably, the wrestler of a photograph is a Sumo wrestler of the higher rank in a list, since this photograph was taken at about 4:00 of the evening. After they(wrestler) finished the match, they return to the stable to which they belong exactly. Some Sumo fans wait them at the exit side, and wish to get wresler's sign or the photograph. The wrestler has also responded pleasantly as part of fan service. Order to cut the topknot was proclaimed in August, Meiji 4 (1871) by the government of those days. However, that the government at the time has endorsed the topknot about Sumo as an exception. A topknot only remains automatically as a wrestler's full dress in traditional progress of Sumo.

1. Sumo:
It is the divine work and festival of Japanese ancient times which take the form which a wrestler cooperates and fights on a Sumo ring, and sumo is also military arts simultaneously and also martial art. The origin of sumo is very old and the situation is described by Haniwa(the terracotta clay figure) and Sue ware in the period of ancient Kofun period (250 to 538). It is from the Edo period(1603–1868)that the status as an occupation started. Compared with the baseball and soccer which were carried in from the West, the population of Sumo is very few. However, since it is a sport which is in the tradition and culture of Japanese ancient times, in deep psyche it is the national sport which is gaining national sympathy and support most.
