Photographer's Note

This picture was taken on the grounds of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on January 2nd 2001. It belongs to the Emperor of Japan.

These grounds are open to the public on the Emperor's birthday, December 23th and on January 2nd, the day after new years. The rest of the year, these grounds are off limits.

The Imperial Palace is called The Kōkyo and is not far from Tokyo Station. It is in the centre of Tokyo. The grounds are huge and is protected to the outside by wide canals.

You can see the Emperor and his family behind the glass. I must say I actually can't remember that much of it. I can't remember if he spoke or not. He appeared a few times that day for a brief period. We didn't have to wait that long before he appeared but it was, as expected, very crowded. I do remember that the security check before entering the grounds was extremely tight. It was very crowded but well organized and the entire group was guided thru the gardens to the exit on the north east. The gardens were beautiful.

The entire event was one of the highlights of my trip. I still have the little flag. (:
