Photographer's Note

This photograph is taken in the precincts of a Shinto shrine in Yushima Tenman-gū of Ueno, Tokyo. This is a shrine which has deified Michizane Sugawara who is God of learning. If it becomes near the taking-an-examination season, the prep student of many junior high school students or a high school student will come here, and they will pray for success. It was accompanied to the teacher of leading by the junior high school student's group, and they was coming to the shrine. In the shrine office, they were praying to God by buying a sacred oracle or a votive picture(ema), and fastening to the trees of the precincts of a temple. The taking-an-examination season in Japan is from January in February. And, Charms other than success prayer, such as prosperity in business, traffic safety, healthy prayer, and household harmony, are sold at the shrine office.
