Photographer's Note

This photograph was taken by that of Rikugien in Tokyo Bunkyo-ku. Acrobatics of Daikagura which is one of the Edo entertainments was performed to the courtyard of the garden. The acrobat was doing the event in the pair by the player with a shamisen. The visitors were seeing the surroundings. It began from the acrobatics using temari ball and moved the acrobatics using an umbrella, etc. He is handling well ball or cup. It had played performance about about 30 minutes. Daikagura has arisen from the formula comfort and the bugaku which deify a shrine for many years. And then, it changes the public entertainments centering on the lion dance and acrobatics which begin at the Edo period. And, it develops arts with Meiji, Taisho and Showa, and a time, and is inherited to the present of Heisei. Daikagura has arranged the element which should be called starting point of entertainments.

Shamisen: The shamisen is Japanese musical instrument with three-stringed, and it plays with a plectrum called a bachi.
