Photographer's Note

I came across this beautiful custom car in a backstreet of chinatown in Yokohama. I was standing around it for quite a while just to figure out the best POV. I took a series of photographs and finally selected this one as my favourite choice.

I wish I would be able of telling what brand this car is, but unfortunately there was no reference whatsoever, only the owner or a vintage car expert could tell. Yokohama is actually full with beautiful old classic cars. A lot of them can be seen in, near or around chinatown.

Since this car is vintage, I selected B&W as the medium to go for. I though colour would spoil the image too much, and I wanted to get attention to the beautiful curves of the old car. Another important thing was the light reflections on the car and the chrome bumper.

During editing, I actually noticed some other interesting details:
The sign "no parking," the hair dresser price sigh on the right, and the woman on the road on the right side of the building searching for something.

I remembering the old series my mum used to watch when I was a kid, it was called "Chicago 1930," I wanted to get a bit the feeling of this era. I know the car is not that old, however I still was fixed with this idea to get close to the "film noir" mood.

Post editing workflow:
Converted to B&W, cropped to center the car, applied strong vignette, increased contrast, clarity and sharpness, masked the center and increased slightly the highlights on the car only, burned the asphalt in the foreground to prevent dominance, masked the no parking sign, hair dresser sign and the woman on the right and increased the exposure to give it some secondary attention.
