Photographer's Note

This photo is one that was taken at the southern shores of Lake Notoro, Abashiri located in eastern Hokkaido. Lake Notoro is in a brackish lake because it is connected to the sea northwest end of the lake. In addition, many birds such as whooper swans, cancer and duck comes flying in this lake. On the other hand, saline wetland has developed the low-lying shore as seen in the photo and it is the habitat of Salicornia europaea(Glasswort) with the red color.

Salicornia europaea:
It's a year of herb belonging to the Chenopodiaceae, is widely distributed in boreal Europe, Asia, and North America in the world. It is a salt plant which grows in salt marshes develop inland or land in contact with the sea. Stem of Salicornia is 10 ~ 35cm in height with dark green color. To form a section 10 ~ 35cm height, cylindrical in shape with dark green, the branches are opposite leaf arrangement from section stems Salicornia. And, by forming a section of cylindrical, branches from the opposite leaf arrangement section it. Dark green branches and stems of Salicornia is changed to red purple when it comes to fall. Among the halophyte, Salicornia is shown particularly strong resistance to salt. It is a plant-dependent on the presence of salt.
