Photographer's Note

Hiroshima is a symbol of many things due to its A-Bomb destruction in WWII. There is a powerful and worthy museum, plus a strong anti-nuclear weapons position of the local government that would like to see an international ban on nuclear weaponry.

There is a belief in Japan that if you have a wish and you make 1000 origami birds, it will come true. One girl (who, I believe, was dying of cancer from the bomb radiation) wished to live, but only managed to make 700 something birds before she died.

Today, people from all over, though it is mostly Japanese students on school trips, bring masses of origami birds daily to help with the wishes of the people of Hiroshima - that a nuclear attack never happens again in the world.

I am have missed interpreted some details of these stories, but the base is correct.
