Photographer's Note

A real 'nice' wander along the edge of an active Ijen volcano in this stark barren landscape at 2300 m asl in Banyuwangi, East Java. Finally a good morning light was to be had after a 4 hour trek up, leaving volcano observatory base station at 0200 hrs in a cold morning. But be warned of pungent sulphuric fumes continuously emitting from a 1 km wide turquoise coloured acidic lake below - being the most acidic crater lake on earth.

Hope you can see those tiny 'ants' just to give the scale proportion of an extensive dangerous sight - a combination of nature and toxicity. Even from this high shooting point you still could smell a whiff of the stinging sulphur fumes. A gentle reminder that volcano never sleeps.

That's a masterpiece of nature so to speak and you don't a need gas mask to enjoy this simple picture

The walking track meandering around the caldera and with the odd hiker or 2 visible in the distance adds tremendous perspective. Good sharpness and shadow detail. Tfs!

It is landscape photography at its best. It shows the ruggedness of nature. The cloud illuminated at the right top is the cherry on ice.

Hello Abmdsudi, a very impressive view. I love the colours and textures of this inhospitable terrain.
The sunlit cloud on the right adds more interest, or is it clouds of sulphurous smoke?
The people certainly add scale to this excellent picture.

Very strange landscape. And incredibly beautiful too. Yellow cloud rising from the crater is extraordinary. And eroded terrain of that slope is special too. Good angle along this ridge you were standing on.

The details of the volcanic crater, the rising gases and the amazing effects of the sunlight, combine to make this look like a scene from Hell!
