Photographer's Note

Gunung Halimun Salak is a National Park in West Java, Indonesia. "Gunung" is the Bahasa Indonesian word for "mountain". This park in West Java was established in 1992.

The landscape of Gunung Halimun Salak is composed of different land uses such as farm land, tea plantations, settlement and some mining activity. Chevron, the energy company is also doing some geothermal mining activity in the area. The government of Indonesia declared the mountain a national park in 2003. Although a national park, multi-stakeholders and multiple land-uses that are taking place in the area has created some disagreement from the local people and the government.

I learned from some members of the community that the designation and activities in the national park contributed to the continued land degradation in the area even if there is the effort from the government to introduce collaborative management and zoning system.
