Photographer's Note

Pulau Nias is an idyllic island off the west coast of Sumatra. Taken about 1 km from Saroke Beach, a world famous surfing mecca on the south of the island. This area was severely affected by the tsunami. Gunung Sitoli, the main town on the north coast, was even worse off.

The beach isn't much good here for swimming. Its surrounded by coral reef & the water was only 4 inches deep. However, there is a good swimming beach (or was), at Lagundi in the opposite direction to Saroke, also about 1 km away. I met a fisherman offering freshly caught lobster along this beach. I should have taken him up on his offer. 'Pulau' is the Indonesian or 'Bahasa' word for island. I was very surprised to see that this is the only Trek Earth entry for Nias Island.

I was a bit nervous walking along this beach, as the coconut trees are very tall, & falling coconuts kill several people on this island every year.
